Amo Celebrates $1.2 Million Federal Investment in Cumberland Stormwater Improvements to Protect Local Businesses and Jobs

October 27, 2026

Federal funding helped upgrade drainage infrastructure in Cumberland’s largest business park, protecting local businesses, workers, and critical infrastructure

Cumberland, RI –  TODAY, Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI-01) joined local leaders today to celebrate the completion of a $1.2 million stormwater infrastructure project along Industrial Road, helping Cumberland address chronic flooding in its largest commercial area and better protect the businesses, workers, and infrastructure that keep its economy moving.

Industrial Road is Cumberland’s largest commercial area and business park, home to more than 30 businesses. During increasingly frequent heavy rainstorms, outdated drainage infrastructure has contributed to flooding that disrupts business operations, delays deliveries, and can prevent employees from getting to work.

The completed project upgrades the area’s stormwater system to capture, manage, and treat runoff before returning it to the state’s drainage system. These improvements help reduce flooding, protect nearby infrastructure, support reliable business operations during severe weather, and safeguard water quality and the surrounding environment.

“Federal resources should make a real difference in people’s lives and in the communities they call home,” said Congressman Gabe Amo. “This $1.2 million investment led by my predecessor, Congressman Cicilline, is helping Cumberland tackle a longstanding problem for local businesses and workers. By improving stormwater infrastructure, we’re helping protect jobs, keep goods moving, and strengthen one of Cumberland’s most important business areas. I’m proud to continue delivering for Rhode Islanders.”

Background

Community project funding was secured by Senators Jack Reed (D-RI), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and former Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI-01) through a FY2023 funding package.

Industrial Road is Cumberland's largest commercial area and business park, home to over thirty businesses. The federal funding was used to implement an efficient stormwater drainage system to prevent flooding during heavy rainfall events.
