Rhode Island has secured $251 million from the federal government to repair, replace or remove more than a dozen bridges over Interstate 95 in Providence, the state's federal congressional delegation announced Friday.

"This is a vital transportation artery that needs attention, and we don’t want another bridge closure. This is a smart investment that will help make needed repairs to improve safety, efficiency, reliability and longevity [of] these bridges," Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Representatives Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo said in a joint statement on the grant.
