WLNE: State, federal officials attend ceremonial swearing-in of Rep. Gabe Amo

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — State and local officials joined together at the U.S. District Court in Providence to ceremonially swear-in Congressman Gabe Amo Sunday.

Attendants included Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, Congressman Seth Magaziner, and Mayor Brett Smiley as well as Amo’s family.

“I’ve been looking forward to today more than that moment because we are in this shared moment, this shared story that I have talked about many times before,” Amo said. “Our Rhode Island story, and that’s not possible without so many people here in this room and so many people who are with us in spirit.”

The congressman, the first person of color in Congress from the state, was elected to the 1st Congressional District in a special election after beating a large field of candidates for the Democratic nomination. 

Amo was sworn in at the House of Representatives on Nov. 13.
