Amo Hosts Town Hall with HealthSource RI to Answer Rhode Islanders' Questions about the Republican Health Care Crisis

December 3, 2025

Trump and Congressional Republicans’ failure to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits is causing premiums to skyrocket for 41,000 Rhode Islanders

WASHINGTON, DC – LAST NIGHT, Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI) and HealthSource RI Director Lindsay Lang answered Rhode Islanders’ questions about the health crisis created by ongoing Republican efforts to undermine the Affordable Care Act.

"The health care crisis Trump and Republicans are inflicting on the American people is forcing Rhode Islanders to make impossible choices between affording care and making ends meet. It’s driving up costs for everyone, no matter where they get their care,” said Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI). “Thank you to all who called in to share your stories of eye-popping health insurance premium increases. I'm grateful to HealthSource RI Director Lang and her team for their hard work to help Rhode Islanders get covered. I'm fighting in Washington to make it easier for Rhode Islanders to access reliable, affordable health care.”

“Healthcare and health coverage are on the top of many Rhode Islanders’ minds right now, as the reality of health coverage increases sets in, not only for HealthSource RI customers, but for countless thousands of others who are impacted by the projected effects of these federal changes,” said HealthSource RI Director Lindsay Lang. “We welcome the opportunity to speak directly with those who’ve shared their own stories and questions, and we want to assure Rhode Islanders that HealthSource RI is here to help – to ensure that as many as possible stay connected to coverage and all available financial assistance to meet their healthcare needs, and to help protect them from further financial hardships that can result from going uninsured.”

Background

Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans are inflicting a systematic health care crisis on the American people. If Republicans let the tax credits that help millions of Americans afford their health care through the Affordable Care Act expire, more than 41,000 Rhode Islanders will see their health insurance costs rise exponentially.

Open enrollment for health coverage through Rhode Island’s Affordable Care Act exchange, HealthSource RI, began on November 1, 2025. You can visit the HealthSource RI website or call 1-855-840-4774 to learn more and explore your coverage options.

In November, Congressman Amo met with Marlene Prichard, a retired teacher and breast cancer survivor, to hear how her health insurance premiums will jump from roughly $800 a month to over $1400 a month in 2026.

In October, Amo joined behavioral and mental health leaders at Butler Hospital to discuss how Republican attacks on health care impede Rhode Islanders’ ability to get care.

In September, Congressman Amo rallied with HealthSource RI Director Lindsay Lang, health care providers, patients, and community leaders at Blackstone Valley Community Health Care to demand Republicans extend cost-saving Affordable Care Act health insurance tax credits that help Americans afford health care.

Congressman Amo has voted to protect Rhode Islanders’ health care since being sworn in to Congress in 2023. He voted against Republicans’ Big, Ugly Law, which stripped more than $1 trillion from America's health care system in July after speaking against the bill at 3 am, not once but twice.
