Amo Statement on Anniversary of January 6th Attack on U.S. Capitol and Trump’s Attempt to Overthrow Free and Fair Election
WASHINGTON, DC – TODAY, Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI) released the following statement on the fifth anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol:
“Five years ago, a violent mob stormed our nation’s Capitol at the behest of President Donald Trump, seeking to overturn a free and fair election. Fueled by lies, this attack left a scar on our democracy. We cannot forget the sacrifices made by the brave law enforcement officers who stood between that mob and the heart of our democracy, especially those injured and those who gave their lives in service to our nation.
With the instigator of this attempted coup once again in power, we must remember that Trump and his accomplices sought to overthrow our democracy and have not relented. We should not shy away from the facts of that fateful day; the rioters smashed windows, left human excrement splattering the floors of our Capitol, and forced countless public servants—Republicans and Democrats alike—to flee for their lives. Trump pardoned the rioters, and he and his allies have continued to hollow out our democracy, side with traitors, and put themselves above the rule of law.
January 6th is a clear warning of how fragile our democracy can be when our Constitution is disregarded and a reminder to be constantly vigilant. Today, the best way to observe the anniversary of this tragedy is by recommitting to strengthening our democracy, defending truth, and upholding the rule of law to ensure that our American experiment can endure for generations to come.”
