Amo Statement on Trump’s Unconstitutional Military Action in Venezuela
PROVIDENCE, RI – TODAY, Vice Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI) issued the following statement about Trump’s unconstitutional military action in Venezuela:
“Nicolás Maduro is an undemocratic, corrupt despot whom I oppose. Opposition to a foreign leader is not a legal justification for Trump’s war in Venezuela.
Trump deciding to run Venezuela is not a plan for the day after or a guarantee of democratic governance. This is clearly a quest for oil that puts U.S. troops in harm's way. Trump is again undermining U.S. global leadership while giving autocrats around the world justification to cross borders for their own tyranny.
What we need is answers and oversight, not a permission slip enabling President Trump to engage in new wars, ignore Congress and our constitution, and act with impunity.
Trump is going forward with regime change, all while ignoring the needs of the American people. Congress must immediately vote on a War Powers Resolution to stop Trump’s unconstitutional military action.”
